Graphic Design and its Technicalities

Denis A. Stepanenko

About My Project.

Graphic Design is a very board alley of several different types of art, ranging from digital platforms to more unconventional definitions of this field like wood-cutting. From the many different applications and to the varying methods, I found myself most interested in the field of digital graphic design and how it's applied to political usage.

Through filling out an interest catalog of works that peaked my interest, I began looking closer into works of propaganda, as well as the branding behind certain ideologies, countries, and cities. From there, it became clear what sort of mini-projects I wanted to complete under the guidance of my mentor, Seth Woodies. Initially planning out the summer, I then shadowed his work at a print shop where he encountered numerous opportunities for problem solving, and guiding me through on how to go about certain scenarios.

As a student with some previous graphic design experience in freelancing, get acquainted with the vocabulary and programs wasn't as difficult as it could have been. That being said, I was able to smoothly go about the assignments provided to me and create a branding guide for a fictional city.

My product was more than just a single creation, it was the array of creations I had created both under intense guidance and the projects I did on my own. My goal was to analyze the effectiveness of certain methods and see if consumers would be able to identify said methods. Below is showcased two figures. One figure shows that more survey takers were able to identify the correct purpose of a graphic (Figure 1), while the other shows a high portion of individuals incorrectly identifying which method was used (Figure 2).
